Process Description
The American Shad, a migratory fish once plentiful in the Susquehanna River basin and an important contributor to the local economy, all but disappeared with the construction of hydroelectric dams in the early 1900s. The fish could no longer travel upstream to their native spawning areas. With the construction of a "Fish Lift" at the Conawingo Dam in Maryland, shad were successfully reintroduced to the lower Susquehanna. In an agreement between utility companies and state and local government agencies, the addition of similar "fish lifts" to the Holtwood and Safe Harbor Hydroelectric dams were planned. These would give shad access to tributaries in another 30 mile stretch of the river. A "fish lift" is a complex mechanical system designed to attract the shad into an elevator of sorts and transport them to the lake formed in front of the dam.

Project Description
FEC Technologies was selected by the general contractor and electrical subcontractor to provide panel design and construction, and PLC and HMI programming to provide sequencing of the lift and flow control of attraction water used to lure the shad into the systems.
