Process Description
The Honesdale water system is comprised of a series of wells, pumping stations and reservoir tanks. At the present time since there are no surface water sources this is a non-filtered system. The water is pumped from the wells through small flow monitoring and control facilities where any necessary chemicals such as chlorine are added based on flow pacing. As the fresh water is pumped directly into the distribution system at a flow rate above the usage rate, the tanks fill up. The reservoir tanks provide the necessary volume of water during certain periods when the usage rate is greater than the incoming flow from the wells.

Project Description
FEC Technologies provided a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System consisting of a central personal computer (PC) connected to a Main Terminal Unit (MTU) which communicates via spread spectrum radio with six (6) Remote Terminal Units (RTU) located at the various well and tank sites. The PC provides Human Machine Interface (HMI) for monitoring the system and entering parameters such as level set points for pumping operations and alarm limits. Printers connected to the PC provide alarm logging and process reports. Data transfer from the MTU to RTUs is accomplished via modems and radio telemetry communications. The RTU panels contain PLC equipment for monitoring the tank levels and controlling the chemical feed and pumping operations. Each RTU panel also contains an operator interface keypad display unit for entering operating parameters if local control becomes necessary.

FEC's work included the following:

  • Control System Design
  • Design and program Wonderware HMI software
  • Design, manufacture and program the MTU panel
  • Design, manufacture and program six (6) RTU panels with local operator interface
  • Design and supply radio communication network
  • System start up and training
  • Ongoing support

System Components

  • One (1) Control Microsystems 16EX logic controller with Nematron IWS 120
  • Six (6) Control Microsystems Micro 16 logic controllers with Nematron IWS 30
  • Seven (7) EF Johnson Spread Spectrum radios
  • One (1) PC workstation running Windows NT and Wonderware Intouch
  • Report and alarm printer
